The California Western A.I.M. for Law program, which stands for “Achieve, Inspire, Motivate,” works to increase diversity in the legal profession by helping to prepare low-income and first generation college students for the level of work necessary to succeed in law school. A.I.M. for Law also seeks to inspire and motivate diverse college students to seek a legal education through mentorship and guest speakers from various areas of the legal profession.
The semesters start with a reception at California Western School of Law (CWSL) consisting of program students, their families, current law students, and CWSL and Consensus Organizing Center faculty and staff. Everyone meets at the school to network, enjoy refreshments, and listen to speakers. After the reception, each student is paired with a law student mentor who works with the student throughout the semester.
Starting the week after the mixer, students meet at CWSL or San Diego State University once a week and one Saturday each month to develop the skills necessary to perform well on the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) and succeed in law school. Students practice LSAT questions, brief case opinions, draft law school application personal statements, learn the legal method of writing, and practice oral arguments. Additionally, several attorney guest speakers discuss with students their various areas of law practice and how they were able to achieve a legal education.
