The primary goal of the Legal Path program is to afford access to participation in the legal profession to those who do not now have it as a result of not realizing it is possible and not having the linkage from their high schools into the profession. Many inner-city students have an interest in legal careers, but to these students it is a goal that seems completely unrealistic. Aside from the financial obstacles that come with law school, they have no encouragement, guidance, or knowledge of the steps necessary to enter higher education, law school, or the legal profession. By creating opportunities for low income, inner city students to work toward a career in the legal profession, we not only improve lives, but we improve the profession, our communities, and enhance the public’s confidence in the judicial system.
Each spring, Legal Path will give select juniors from Hoover High School the opportunity to take a semester-long Introduction to Government and Politics class at San Diego State University and participate in several activities to introduce them to San Diego’s legal community. The activities include court tours and observations, meetings with judges and attorneys, law school class observations, and attorney speaker panels. After successfully completing the program, the students will receive college credit, mentoring, and assistance through the college application process and beyond.
In years to come, Legal Path will be expanded to further assist these students on the path to law school. We are actively seeking partnerships with local law firms, law schools, bar associations, and other organizations to expand the pipeline into the profession.
