The Price Community Builder Fellowship Program's goal is to promote graduate level education and build the capacity of the City Heights community and its non-profit organizations. In order to do so newly graduated San Diego State University students are linked with community organizations in City Heights.
Each year six poised students graduating with their Bachelors of Social Work degree are selected to be Community Builders. As a Community Builder they are paired with a social service agency in City Heights in which they become a staff member for 11 months. The agency pays a share of the Community Builder's annual salary and the remainder is subsidized by Price Charities. Simultaneously, Community Builders attend a series of monthly seminars, focusing on how to incorporate Consensus Organizing into the daily dealings of their respective community based organizations.
Community Builders are encouraged to creatively apply their affirmed knowledge of Social Work, branch out into the residential and business sectors, and promote the use of problem-solving techniques that require community involvement. Upon completion of the year's work experience and training, Community Builders receive a $5,000 scholarship to return to San Diego State University to earn a Master's Degree in Administrative Social Work.
