Translation Services
According to research conducted by the City of San Diego Public Library, there are approximately 70,000 residents and over 100 different languages and dialects spoken in City Heights. The multitude of languages makes it difficult for agencies in City Heights to provide adequate communication and services to potential clientele.
Simultaneously, the lack of translation services within agencies, businesses and organizations has resulted in many monolingual immigrant families, being unaware of the abundance of community resources available in their neighborhood, such as libraries, medical centers, mentoring programs, bus routes and transportation, legal services and other social services.
The Consensus Organizing Center is currently working with various funding sources to start breaking down language barriers by providing an interpreting program in City Heights. The Center plans to partner with 3-4 agencies in City Heights to offer the opportunity to utilize our translators at a very competitive rate. Our translators will consists of 10 to 15 bilingual high school students who will gain valuable learning experience, along with knowledge about their neighborhood. Hiring of both agencies and students will be selective.
