Morgan Clark

Morgan’s roots in San Diego run deep. A native born San Diegan, they graduated from UCSD with their Bachelor’s degree on the history of conflict, revolution, and social change. They are currently in their final year of SDSU’s 3-year Master of Social Work program, focusing on administration and community development. Morgan’s previous internship experience was as a school social worker for Central Elementary School in National City, where they helped facilitate the integration of restorative practices as standard training for teachers and administrative staff. Their internship this year will be at the Cuyamaca Cares program at Cuyamaca Community College, working within a team of social workers to address the economic, material, and mental health needs of the school’s diverse student body during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Verna McKinney

Verna McKinney

Verna is in her final year of the Undergraduate Social Work Program and will be interning with the Step Up Program. She has spent most of her undergraduate years at San Diego State empowering students of color, ensuring accessibility to on and off campus resources, while advocating for student’s rights and access. Her work within Residential Education as a Student Advisor within Black Affinity Group as well as a Resident Advisor for the first Black Excellence Residential Learning Community at SDSU displays her advocacy. Each of these roles have provided her with experience in introductory case management. Verna hopes to attain her MSW and further her career in Community Development. She is excited to begin interning with Step Up and engaging with the students.

Jose was born and raised in City Heights. He is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Social Work with a specialization in correctional case management. Jose takes an interest in helping those who were previously incarcerated in hopes to giving them the resources to jump start their lives . He currently interns with Project Rebound where he not only connects with those who have an interest in pursuing their very own bachelor level degrees once they are out of prison, but also continues to assist them throughout their college career by connecting them to on campus recourses.

Maria is currently in her final year of the BASW program at San Diego State and will graduate in the Spring of 2021. Her focus is on administration and community development, she is the Program Manager for the Consensus Organizing Center’s Step Up program with Hoover High School. Her responsibilities include recruiting and mentoring students within the program, sourcing teaching assistants, and facilitating participants’ completion of the program. She is a native San Diegan with over 20 years of professional experience working with the community by assisting clients to find and obtain suitable housing. She has also volunteered with school-aged students assisting them with basic education and organizational skills to create a strong foundation and foster a love of learning. She is motivated by and dedicated to the enhancement of the community’s well-being by providing opportunities and resources throughout San Diego.
